Socio-economic transformation

Contemporary societies are undergoing deep changes that shape the economy, labour markets, education, and public institutions. Global technological shifts, the climate transition, digitalization, and geopolitical change create new challenges, but also new development opportunities. For the countries of the Western Balkans, socio-economic transformation is a key process that should enable sustainable economic development, increased productivity, and stronger social cohesion.

The Association for Research and Social Innovation ADT approaches socio-economic transformation through interdisciplinary research, public policy development, and participatory processes that connect institutions, academia, the private sector, and citizens. Particular emphasis is placed on social justice and intersectionality, as economic transformations can have different consequences for women, youth, workers, rural communities, and other marginalized groups. Through its initiatives, ADT seeks to develop models of transformation that foster innovation, economic development, and social equality.

Reindustrialization

Reindustrialization is a key element of socio-economic transformation, especially in countries that have gone through processes of deindustrialization and loss of productive capacity. Contemporary reindustrialization does not only mean restoring industrial production, but also developing new industries based on clean technologies, advanced production processes, and innovative management models.

ADT explores how Western Balkan countries can develop new industrial sectors that are integrated into global economic value chains while respecting the principles of sustainable development. Through the analysis of industrial policies, regional development strategies, and innovation ecosystems, the organization contributes to understanding how industrial transformation can create new jobs, increase technological capacities, and contribute to the long-term economic development of society.

Research and innovation ecosystems

The development of strong research and innovation ecosystems is essential for long-term economic and social transformation. Universities, research institutes, public institutions, and the private sector together create the knowledge that drives innovation, technological development, and economic competitiveness.

Through its research and initiatives, ADT works to strengthen cooperation between science, the business sector, and public institutions, with a particular focus on connecting research communities in the Western Balkans with the European Union and global research networks. The organization promotes models of open science, interdisciplinary research, and new forms of collaboration that can contribute to the modernization of research systems and the creation of dynamic innovation ecosystems.

Entrepreneurship

Entrepreneurship plays an important role in driving economic innovation, social change, and sustainable development. In contemporary societies, entrepreneurial initiatives increasingly operate at the intersection of technology, sustainability, and social impact, creating new models of value creation that go beyond traditional business practices. In countries undergoing economic and institutional transformation, such as Bosnia and Herzegovina and the wider Western Balkans region, entrepreneurship represents a key pathway for fostering innovation, generating employment, and strengthening resilient local economies.

The Association for Research and Social Innovation ADT approaches entrepreneurship from a research-informed and socially responsible perspective. The organization focuses on understanding how entrepreneurial ecosystems emerge and evolve, particularly in relation to innovation systems, regional development, and social transformation. Through its research and projects, ADT explores how entrepreneurship can contribute to the development of new industries, support green and digital transitions, and create opportunities for young people, women, and marginalized communities.

ADT places particular emphasis on social entrepreneurship and mission-driven innovation, recognizing the potential of entrepreneurial initiatives to address complex societal challenges while generating sustainable economic value. This includes exploring new business models that integrate environmental sustainability, community engagement, and ethical governance. By linking entrepreneurship with broader development goals—such as the green transition, inclusive labor markets, and technological innovation—ADT promotes approaches that balance economic dynamism with social justice and long-term sustainability.

Through its multistakeholder and participatory approach, ADT collaborates with universities, entrepreneurs, investors, public institutions, and civil society organizations to support the development of inclusive entrepreneurial ecosystems. The organization contributes through research, policy analysis, training programs, and collaborative initiatives that strengthen connections between knowledge production, innovation, and local development. In doing so, ADT seeks to foster forms of entrepreneurship that are not only economically viable but also socially transformative and aligned with the public interest.

Innovation in education

Education systems play a key role in preparing societies for technological and economic change. Contemporary transformations require new educational models that encourage critical thinking, interdisciplinarity, creativity, and the development of digital and analytical skills.

ADT explores and develops innovative approaches to education that connect educational institutions with social and economic needs. The organization works on developing educational programmes that encourage active learning, social responsibility, and cooperation between schools, universities, researchers, and local communities. Special attention is given to ensuring equal access to quality education for different social groups, including youth from rural and marginalized communities.

Labour market

Economic transformation has profound consequences for labour markets, employment structures, and workers’ rights. Technological change, digitalization, and industrial transition may lead to the creation of new jobs, but also to the disappearance of existing professions. For this reason, it is important to ensure that socio-economic transformations are just and inclusive.

Through research and public policy analysis, ADT examines changes in the labour market and their impact on workers, trade unions, and different social groups. The organization promotes dialogue between institutions, employers, and trade unions in order to ensure that structural changes in the economy serve the interests of social justice and the protection of labour rights. Particular attention is given to the position of youth, women, and workers in sectors undergoing rapid transformation.

Creative industries

Creative industries are becoming an increasingly important segment of contemporary economies, as they connect culture, technology, innovation, and entrepreneurship. These sectors include areas such as film, design, digital arts, cultural production, and creative media, and they contribute to the development of new economic models and the creation of knowledge- and creativity-based jobs.

ADT recognizes creative industries as an important element of socio-economic transformation that can contribute to the development of local economies, the strengthening of cultural identities, and international cooperation. Through research and projects, the organization supports the development of creative ecosystems that connect artists, entrepreneurs, researchers, and public institutions, and contribute to the creation of innovative economic models in contemporary society.

Public health

Public health is one of the fundamental pillars of socio-economic development, as the health of the population directly affects quality of life, productivity, and social stability. Pandemics, climate change, environmental pollution, and demographic change demonstrate how crucial healthcare systems are for the resilience of societies.

ADT examines how healthcare systems can be reformed in order to become more efficient, equitable, and resilient to future crises. Through interdisciplinary research, the organization analyses the links between public health, the environment, the economy, and social policies. Particular attention is given to inequalities in access to healthcare services and to the impact of socio-economic factors on the health of different social groups.
