Social justice

Social justice is the foundation of stable, inclusive, and democratic societies. It implies a social order in which all people have equal opportunities, access to resources, and protection of their rights regardless of gender, ethnicity, religion, social status, or other social circumstances. In societies undergoing complex political and economic transitions, such as Bosnia and Herzegovina and the wider Western Balkans region, issues of social justice play a particularly important role in building long-term stability and social cohesion.

The Association for Research and Social Innovation ADT approaches these issues through research, public policy development, and participatory social initiatives that connect institutions, civil society, academia, and local communities. Particular emphasis is placed on an intersectional approach, as social inequalities often have multiple and interconnected dimensions that particularly affect women, youth, minority communities, and other marginalized groups. Through multi-sectoral cooperation, ADT develops initiatives that contribute to strengthening human rights, social solidarity, and the building of a more inclusive society.

Democratic oversight of public goods and the public interest

Democratic oversight of public goods and the protection of the public interest are key elements of social justice and accountable governance in contemporary societies. Public goods—including natural resources such as water, forests, land, and air, but also infrastructure, public finances, public services, digital resources, and shared cultural goods—form the basis of collective well-being. The governance of these goods must be transparent, accountable, and oriented toward the long-term public interest, because decisions concerning their use have deep social, economic, and environmental consequences.

Through its research and initiatives, the Association for Research and Social Innovation ADT promotes models of democratic governance of public goods, which include the active participation of citizens, civil society, academia, and institutions in oversight and decision-making processes. Particular attention is also given to the accountability of the business sector, including industries that have significant social and environmental impacts, such as energy, mining, infrastructure, and military industries. ADT examines how transparency, regulatory mechanisms, and participatory processes can ensure that the actions of public institutions and the private sector are aligned with the protection of the public interest, human rights, and the sustainable development of society.

Peace and security

Peace and security are fundamental preconditions for sustainable social and economic development. Societies that have gone through conflict or deep political divisions often face long-term challenges in building trust, institutional stability, and social cohesion. In such contexts, it is especially important to develop initiatives that promote dialogue, cooperation, and the peaceful resolution of conflict.

Through research and projects, ADT analyses the social, political, and economic factors that affect the stability and security of societies. The organization develops initiatives that contribute to strengthening social trust, preventing violence, and promoting cultures of peace. Particular attention is given to involving youth and local communities in peacebuilding processes, as well as to understanding how different social inequalities may affect the security and stability of communities.

Gender justice

Gender justice implies a society in which women and men have equal opportunities, rights, and access to resources, and in which gender inequalities and discrimination are not present in institutions, the economy, or everyday life. Despite significant progress in legislation and public policy, gender inequalities remain an important social challenge in many countries.

In its work, ADT applies feminist and participatory methodologies that enable women and girls to actively participate in research, social initiatives, and decision-making processes. Through research, educational programmes, and public campaigns, the organization works to identify and address the structural causes of gender inequality, while promoting policies and practices that contribute to gender equality and social justice.

Philanthropy and social solidarity

Philanthropy plays an important role in the development of open, resilient, and socially cohesive societies. It involves the mobilization of resources—financial resources, knowledge, time, and social networks—in order to support initiatives that contribute to the public good and address societal challenges. In many contexts, philanthropy represents an important complement to public policies and market-based solutions, enabling the development of innovative social initiatives and providing support to vulnerable communities.

ADT researches and promotes the development of philanthropic ecosystems that strengthen cooperation among citizens, foundations, civil society organizations, the private sector, and public institutions. Through research, public initiatives, and programme development, ADT contributes to understanding how philanthropy can support social innovation, sustainable development, and stronger social cohesion. Particular attention is given to developing transparent and accountable models of philanthropy that contribute to long-term social change.

Social responsibility and human rights

Respect for human rights and the social responsibility of institutions and organizations are key elements of a democratic society. Transparency, accountability, and the protection of the fundamental rights of citizens form the basis for building trust between institutions and society.

Through research and advocacy initiatives, ADT works to raise awareness of the importance of human rights and the responsible conduct of institutions, organizations, and the business sector. The organization develops programmes that promote the protection of fundamental rights, the fight against discrimination, and the strengthening of citizen participation in decision-making processes. Particular focus is placed on protecting the rights of marginalized communities and strengthening accountability mechanisms in both the public and private sectors.

Interreligious dialogue

In societies that are culturally and religiously diverse, interreligious dialogue plays an important role in building mutual understanding and social cohesion. Open dialogue between different religious communities can help overcome prejudice, strengthen trust, and promote shared values such as solidarity, tolerance, and respect for human dignity.

ADT promotes initiatives that encourage cooperation among different religious communities, institutions, and civil society organizations. Through research, public discussions, and educational programmes, the organization contributes to creating space for constructive dialogue and joint action in addressing social challenges.

International cooperation

In the contemporary world, many social challenges—from climate change and migration to economic transformation—go beyond the borders of individual states. For this reason, international cooperation is essential for the exchange of knowledge, the development of innovative solutions, and the strengthening of institutional capacities.

ADT actively participates in international research networks and projects that connect organizations, universities, and institutions from different countries. The organization is particularly engaged in strengthening cooperation between the countries of the Western Balkans and European and global partners, promoting knowledge exchange, joint research, and the development of innovative social solutions to complex global challenges.
